Description

Not really a Deviation
more a way of promoting this piece of art.
This is Marc Quinns Self IV 2006

Marc Quinn Started the Self series in 1991. It is a close to a perfect self portrait as it is possible to get, made not only as a perfect replica of Quinns face but from his flesh.
The fact that it must be kept at a constant temperature of -12c to prevent the decay or destruction of the piece, presents the viewer with ideas about the fragility of life. If the temperature was to drop or rise just a little the piece would simply no longer exist. Just as if one of the million variable which allow our life and continued existence were to change we, the Human race, would simply no longer exist.
He makes a new version of the sculpture every five years, to chart how time decays him. A newer version of the sculpture, an older version of the artist. This is version VI and can been seen as part of the permanent collection at the National Portrait Gallery in London.
It has always been my favorite piece of art and I finally got to see it this week. The reflections add another element to this piece that i wasn't expecting. And although they can be annoying when trying to take a photo, they also involve you more in the piece. Placing you face over his, this could be your face, your blood; this is your life, your existence. Please if you get the chance go and visit this art work and spend some time thinking about the true meaning, not just the horrors of seeing a full size cast of Marc Quinns face made from 4.5 liters of hiw own frozen blood.
"A frozen moment on life support." Marc Quinn.
